CHAPTER TEN

October 18th

8:50 A.M.

“Good morning, Maddy,” Olivia Oswald greeted her as she walked in the front door to Prey’s offices.

She’d been summoned.

A phone call at eight this morning asking—although it felt more like an order—her to come down to the office at nine to answer a few questions.

Her trust in these people had been shattered.

Decimated.

It had taken everything she had not to run last night. If she’d had somewhere to go she might have.

No.

That was a lie.

As much as she longed to get as far away from Hawk and his family and the heartache they’d brought her, she wouldn’t do that to her son. She was serious about sharing custody with Hawk. She would never hurt her child by denying him his father. Maddy knew that loss far too personally, and she would never inflict that kind of pain and suffering on Louie.

So, she was stuck here.

For now, she couldn’t leave the city, but she absolutely would be leaving these offices as soon as humanly possible.

“Morning,” she said because it had been drilled into her as a child to be polite, so manners were ingrained enough to be automatic.

“Want me to look after the little guy for you until Hawk gets here?” Olivia asked.

Instinct had her tightening her hold on Louie’s stroller, not quite as good as holding her son himself but better than nothing. Trust was gone between her and the Oswald family, and while Olivia might not be blood-related, she had married Eagle and given him a daughter. Her loyalty was to them, not to her and Louie. Hawk’s threat had replayed in her head all night as she tossed and turned. Would he really do it? And if he tried, how could she stop it from happening?

“It's okay, I’ll stay here where you can see me,” Olivia said as though sensing her hesitancy to let Louie go. But that was something she was going to have to get used to. Even if Hawk didn't steal him, she was going to have to share custody, which meant there would be a lot of handing her baby off and leaving him.

With a slow nod, she handed the stroller over to Olivia. May as well get used to this feeling now. “Where am I going?”

“In there.” Olivia pointed to the same room she’d been taken to the first time she came here. She already knew that none of Prey’s clients were allowed off the first floor, so it seemed she was back to a nobody again in the Oswald family’s eyes.

No, not a nobody.

A traitor.

“Why don’t you go in? Eagle, Raven, and Falcon will be in soon,” Olivia suggested. “I’ll stay right here with Louie until Hawk comes.”

“I fed Louie just before I left, and I pumped some breastmilk, it's in a refrigerated bag, so Hawk can give him his next feed.” Touching a lingering kiss to Louie’s cheek, she walked into the room and took a seat at the table. Hawk had asked to spend the afternoon with Louie, and she suspected that the interrogation she was about to endure would last all day.
